Social Security Disability:
Social Security Disability (SSD) is part of the Federal Social Security Act. Under this Act, disabled workers and their families may qualify for disability payments and other benefits, such as medical coverage. A second program under the Social Security Act is Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which is based on financial need. To qualify for SSI benefits, a person must be found to be disabled under the Social Security Administration's definition, and must also meet certain financial criteria as well.
Eligibility:
You may qualify for SSD/SSI benefits if a) you have a severe physical or mental impairment that prevents you from working; b) you have a disability that prevents you from doing any job, not just what you used to do; c) your disability has lasted or is expected to last at least 12 months; or you have a disability that is life threatening. Again, to qualify for Maryland SSI, there are financial criteria that must be met, once disability has been established.
Qualifying Disabilities:
Many different conditions can keep you from working. Examples of some of these conditions are AIDS/HIV, Arthritis, Asthma, Blindness, Cancer, Diabetes, Epilepsy, Heart Disease, Herniated Discs, Hypertension, Multiple Sclerosis or Stroke. A combination of conditions can also prevent you from working.
